While there had been hope that bids for the new Garfield Park and Pool would be awarded during the Tuesday night (Feb 21st) Danville City Council meeting, City Engineer Sam Cole confirmed during the meeting that the bids had come in higher than expected, so there’s still some work to do. Four bids came in for the park, one for the pool; and the one for the pool was actually a bid for both projects. Cole says the hope is that maybe adjusting the plans back a little bit will allow this bidding process to still work out, without starting all over.
AUDIO: I think really what we’re looking at is, what elements do we have to maybe cut back on without making it feel like we cut back on the project, right? What are the things that aren’t going to be hugely consequential; we get a great project out of this, and it still feels like it’s a project everyone in the community wants. But we do it at the price that we can afford, and what we’ve budgeted for.
Meanwhile, Danville mayor Rickey Williams, Jr did not hide his opinion of disappointment when he confirmed a rumor that had come to his office a while back. A medical facility looking to move into the old Dillman Eye Care on Logan is, he says, a facility that would be offering abortions. The mayor said afterwards, now the city will just let the process take over.
AUDIO: They would have to first receive a certificate of occupancy. Our inspectors would have to confirm that the building is suitable, and in the right order for what they intend to do there. So you can be sure that they will make sure they’re most diligent.
The mayor says he checked into it himself when rumors were called into his office, so he could state for sure whether or not it would be an abortion clinic.
