It’s making its way back, and maybe all the way back next year. As Jan Seeley recently told Laura Williams on 1490 WDAN’s Community Connection program, the Christie Clinic Illinois Race Weekend in Champaign-Urbana got knocked back a bit during the pandemic. But this year, they’ll be closer to the full load of different races they are known for over a three day period.
This year it’s April 27th, 28th, and 29th; Thursday through Saturday. And with any luck, Seeley says, the full marathon will be back in 2024. This year marks the return of the half-marathon.
AUDIO: That feels like progress. And then we have a coalition here in town, broadly composed of representatives from Urbana, Champaign, the University, city leaders; to have a plan to get that marathon distance back for 2024. And with any, I’m not going to call it luck, a lot of hard work; we want to be able to finish the work on that and possibly announce this year, while we’re planning for 2023, that the marathon will be back next year.
