Good transportation news and a call to a “pre-tournament cleanup” were the themes from Tuesday (March 14th) evening’s Danville City Council Public Works Committee meeting. Public Transportation Director Lisa Beith says Danville Mass Transit bus ridership has been up each month since last July, anywhere between six and 34 percent per month.

Meanwhile, one of the often used “alternate north-south routes between Vermilion and Bowman,” running from Liberty Lane to Poland Road, is getting a major overhaul. City Engineer Sam Cole says residents who live in the area of Ferndale Avenue have been asking for this for a long time. And it’s happening this year, about a two month project, anywhere between early and late in the construction season. Cole says some utility pole and facilities movement has already started.

And finally, a reminder from Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr to please come out for Saturday’s Great American Cleanup, which begins in the main DACC parking lot. The idea is to make sure the area around DACC is looking good for all the visitors during next week’s NJCAA Division II Tournament.
Audio PlayerAUDIO: Usually what happens is you are partnered with somebody, and you get a block or two, and you cover that area together. And it’s actually kind of a great bonding time, because you get to talk to folks that maybe you didn’t even know before. So it’s good community building too.
The time for Saturday’s Great American Cleanup is 9 AM to 11 AM. Meet in the DACC parking lot. Proper clothing and work gloves are recommended.
