It is that time of year when everyone has spring fever and wants to do yardwork. But as Brian MacKenzie recently reminded Laura Williams on 1490 WDAN’s Community Connection program; even for just planting a tree, or anything that involves digging, be sure to call JULIE first, at 8-1-1 or 1-800-892-0123. And you need to do it 48 hours ahead of starting your planned project, excluding holidays or weekends.
As MacKenzie explained, JULIE is simply the “middle man” who then informs the public utilities to go check things out.
Audio PlayerAUDIO: We are just a message handling service. We do not actually perform the locate. So when someone calls in we take that information, and then we turn that into a locate request form; which goes out to anybody who’s in that area, and any utilities that are buried.
MacZenzie said any damage done without calling JULIE makes you liable. He also mentioned that they only handle public utility lines, not private.
Audio PlayerAUDIO: Maybe you have a garage or a shed on that property, and you have actually installed some private electric to that building; that stuff will not be located by the utility companies; only things that they own. So they will actually stop at the meter; they would stop at the gas meter, they would stop at your electric meter.
