SPRINGFIELD, IL – Today, State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) passed Senate Bill 1212 out of the House of Representatives Amends the Roadside Memorial Act Provides that a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) memorial marker and a fatal crash memorial marker shall be maintained for four years instead of only two years currently. This would be from the date the last person was memorialized on the marker. The bill now goes to the governor for consideration.
“These roadside memorials are not something we plan for and nobody relishes the fact that we have them, but we feel four years is an appropriate time for remembering and honoring those victims,” commented Rep. Niemerg. “This suggested legislation came from a constituent of Senator Rose and I am honored to help pass this in the House of Representatives.”
The DUI Memorial Sign program was established to memorialize deceased victims of crashes caused by drivers found to be under the influence of alcohol, or other drug or intoxicating compounds, as well as to raise the public awareness of the consequences of driving while impaired.
