Various entities and social media pages have recently reported sightings of a runaway emu. Kathleen Orcutt from Vermilion County Animal Regulation and Animal Shelter says yes, this is probably that very last one of about a half-dozen set free by vandalism last summer that was never caught. It’s home location was north of Danville, near East Winter Street. At last report, it had headed towards Potomac, and then probably towards Champaign County. Sure enough, earlier this week authorities were trying to capture it along I-74 in Urbana.
AUDIO: He or she survived the winter and has a nice food supply right now. The problem is right now is it’s just incredibly scared and doesn’t know where it is. We hope that it’s going to be able to be captured and returned to its owner.
Orcutt says call 9-1-1 or a non-emergency police number if you see the emu. Trying to do anything to help the animal on your own is extremely dangerous.
