The long wait is finally over for citizens anxious to play games at the new Golden Nugget Casino in Danville. It was learned Friday that the casino will open its doors at 4:00 p.m. Saturday to welcome its first customers.
A spokesman for the Illinois Gaming Board says a temporary operating permit was issued on Friday. The permit will allow the casino to open on Saturday. Representatives from the Illinois Gaming Board have been in Danville this week watching how things went when some local VIPs were invited to try out the casino. The test runs occurred on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
A Saltgrass Steak House which is adjacent to the casino is already open. Both the steak house and the casino are still looking to hire additional help.
{The Golden Nugget Casino has already had a positive impact on the city. In the photo above a check for $1-million-dollars was presented to the City of Danville in March. The money will help make improvements along the riverfront south and west of Danville’s downtown area.}
Jimmy Wilmot, President of Danville Development, says ”We are excited to take the next big step in the process, and open our casino to the over 21 public. We are incredibly thankful of the hard work and support of the Danville Community, Greater Vermilion County, and the State of Illinois, especially the efforts of the Illinois Gaming Board. Without all of these agencies and their representatives’ efforts we wouldn’t be here today.”

Danville Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr. noted in a post on social media this week that the city’s new Golden Nugget Casino was made possible thanks to the efforts of a lot of people…’’including but not limited to: my predecessors Mayors (Bob) Jones and (Scott) Eisenhauer, who worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality; our City of Danville Aldermen across the years and our City Team; our State Legislators across the years (including) the late Senators Babe Woodyard and Scott Bennett, along with Senator Judy Myers, former Senator and current Illinois State Treasurer Mike Frerichs, State Representatives (Bill) Black, (Chad) Hayes and (Mike) Marron.
The Mayor’s post also thanked the Illinois General Assembly and Governor Pritzker, the Illinois Gaming Board, and local economic gurus (the late Lou Mervis and Vickie Haugen) without who this project would have never come to fruition,’’ said the Mayor’s post. He went on to thank casino steering committee members, the Wilmot Family and Wilmorite Team, along with the Golden Nugget/Landrys teams, many investors and local labor unions, craftsmen and businesses who brought this vision to life. The Mayor thanked all for believing and investing in Danville.
