The boat races are back this weekend at the Gao Grotto along Lake Vermilion. Early last year, the Marine Racing Club took a tour of the site during the winter, then raced at the Gao Grotto in August. This year, they’re back earlier. And Danville’s Alderman Rick Strebing, who’s been a major part of the Gao Grotto for many years, told Neuhoff Media that with this year’s earlier date and some adjustments; they intend to have the Marine Racing Club here for many years to come.
AUDIO: We’re hoping that this year with the points system, and being earlier on the agenda, they’ll be coming back repeatedly.

Strebing says they’ll be going with a full schedule Saturday and Sunday; along with the 3 PM to 6 PM warmup session on Friday
AUDIO: They get the training all all that kind of stuff out of the way; and get used to the water. Saturday and Sunday they’ll start at 10 o’clock and run until six.
Strebing also says the great thing about Friday’s session is; if you want to learn how to race a boat, the Marine Racing Club will give you some tips.
AUDIO: Friday they’re going to have a teaching class, where you can actually learn how to drive one of these boats, or your kids can learn how to ride one of these boats. And when they get trained, then they have one heat where everybody who trained that day gets to race in one race. So, they’ll be a first, second, and third place winner.
Strebing says there will be great food, as always; from homemade corndogs, to sloppy joes, and more.
