Champaign Police are seeking help from the public as they investigate two shootings that occurred early Sunday morning (June 11, 2023). The incidents left eight people hurt. Five of them suffered gunshot wounds, one was stabbed, and the other two were hurt in motor vehicle collisions related to one of the shootings.
In a news release Champaign Police said officers were called to the 100 block of Neil Street shortly before 1:30 Sunday morning on a report of a shooting with injury. Police found a 21-year-old female victim from Champaign with a non-life-threatening injury to an arm and a 21-year-old Champaign man with a potentially life-threatening stab wound to the back. Both victims were still hospitalized Sunday and were reported in stable condition according to police.
In the second incident Champaign Police were called to the 1000 block of North Sixth Street at 3:35 a.m. Sunday on a report of a shooting with injuries and multiple traffic collisions. Police discovered four individuals had been struck by gunfire and two others were struck by vehicles related to this incident.
Champaign Police say the victims in that incident include:
- A 17-year-old male who suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head. He remained hospitalized Sunday in critical condition.
- A 29-year-old male who suffered a single gunshot wound to a leg. He remained hospitalized Sunday in stable condition.

- A 23-year-old female, also injured in a motor vehicle collision related to the shootings, was reported in critical condition Sunday.
Champaign Police say their initial investigation of the first incident in the 100 block of south Neil Street found it started as an argument inside a nearby business that spilled into the street. A large fight erupted during which multiple shots were fired and the female was struck. Additionally, the male victim was stabbed in the back. The fight quickly dispersed, and the suspects fled from the area.
In the second incident, Champaign Police say they learned a large crowd had gathered in the area of the 1000 block of North Sixth Street when an unknown subject started shooting. Police say a very chaotic scene erupted as multiple vehicles attempted to quickly leave the area. Police say that caused at least three collisions resulting with two reported injuries.
