As we approach the Fourth of July, the Danville Police Department has two very important reminders. First, DO NOT park on the Dallas Bowman Bridge across Lake Vermilion to watch fireworks. During this past weekend’s fireworks display at Gao Grotto, many did. Deputy Chief Terry McCord says that caused Vermilion County vehicles to have trouble getting across the bridge during an emergency situation. Deputy Chief McCord says, simply put; that cannot happen.
AUDIO: And it took a considerable amount of time to get over that bridge. It’s pretty clearly marked; “No Parking, No Standing.” We understand that people want to watch the fireworks, and we want to do everything we can to support that. But we just can’t have that happening. That’s just too much of a danger and a risk for everybody.
The next fireworks show is this Saturday at the Danville Boat Club. Deputy Chief McCord says they are working to have additional signs, additional patrols, and are also working with the Streets Department to possibly have some barricades along the sides of the bridge.
The second reminder is that the Independence Day Safety Campaign continues until the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 5th. That means extra patrols, funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, will be out and about; especially looking for anyone driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, as well as driving without proper seat belt usage.
AUDIO: We understand it’s a party weekend. We understand we need to celebrate the nation’s independence, and we want everybody to do it responsibly. If you’ve been drinking, if you’re buzzed; make sure you get a driver. Make plans ahead. Try not to do anything that’s going to risk anyone’s safety, including yours and everyone around you.
And as a final reminder: this year especially, setting off your own fireworks is extremely discouraged, especially considering the burn ban Danville has issued due to extreme dryness because of drought conditions.
