It is a big holiday weekend at Kickapoo State Park as efforts continue there to recover from Thursday’s severe storm. Campground host Doug Elliott said Friday that “right now it’s a disaster,” but he added roads are open and people are still arriving to camp at the park located northwest of Danville, Illinois.
More volunteers and employees from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources showed up Saturday to help with the cleanup. One man from Milford, who said he likes camping at Kickapoo, even brought a piece of heavy equipment to help.
Elliott said Friday that there is no power or hot water and he had no idea when the power would be back on. He added most campsites are fine but a tent campground took a hard hit during the storm. It remained littered with downed trees and limbs. But despite that people were still pitching tents there. And as for people who planned to spend the holiday period camping at Kickapoo, Elliott said: “We’ll accommodate them the best we can.”
The park remains open and Kickapoo Adventures – a popular canoeing and kayaking business located there – is also open.
