ABOVE: Danville City Council Public Works Committee Chairman Mike Puhr discusses proposals for rules adjustments on vote requirements for passage in committee and full council. Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr looks on.
Although it’s just in the discussion phase right now, Danville City Council Public Works Committee Chairman Mike Puhr and Vice-Chairman Bob Iverson have drafted a proposal that would fine-tune passage requirements for ordinances. For passage in committee, you would need four votes; the majority of the whole committee, NOT just the majority of the quorum present that night. Same with the full council; you would need eight votes for a majority of the whole council, and just the majority of whatever quorum is present that night.
Alderman Puhr says this needs to be looked at by the other committee before it moves any further.
AUDIO: And it’ll go on to the Public Services Committee at the end of this month, get their input, and then we’ll decide whether to take it for a full vote in August before the full City Council.
Committee member Carolyn Wands did not favor this change, and neither did Alderwoman Sherry Pickering, who was present, and nor did Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr; who was also present. Another possibility for the proposal was the idea that if something is voted down in committee, it would be considered DOA right there, and not get a second chance in the council. That also received lots of objection, so this proposal is likely to be adjusted significantly before it reaches a vote before the full City Council.

City could clear final hurdle for tear down of Bresee Tower during July 18th court date.
Meanwhile, next week is Danville’s next day in court concerning Bresee Tower. Mayor Williams says building owner Chris Collins’ recent 14 day window to do a full inspection of the building was not acted upon, and therefore the city could be receiving full clearance, in just a handful of days, to prepare for tearing the structure down.
AUDIO: We would be granted the authority to demolish it and then place a lien on the property; so that we can foreclose on that, and the city is required to clean it up.
Mayor Williams says that court date is next Tuesday, July 18th.

Northwest corner of Gilbert and Fairchild, site of old Goodwill building, will be the new home for Kirchner Building Centers.
The Public Works Committee also approved the city’s purchases of properties at 937 and 939 Robinson Street, which would clear the way for Kirchner Building Centers’ planned relocation to the northwest corner of Gilbert and Fairchild.

Community Development Administrator Logan Cronk says work is continuing on placing new restaurants inside old Downtown Danville Turk Furniture building.
Finally, whatever happened to the planned restaurants coming to the old downtown Turk Furniture building? Community Development Administrator Logan Cronk says one entity in particular is getting closer, and that’s Revel Bakery and Play Cafe.
AUDIO: We have a full set of approved architectural drawings for the bakery and play center for children. I believe it’s called Revel Bakery. I think that’s public, they went out public for that. So that’s one restaurant.
Cronk says the previously mentioned WildFire BBQ is still in the works, but they’re in the process of some final negotiations.
