This is Constitution Week. And one of the best ways to celebrate the United States Constitution being the oldest constitution still in active use in the world today is through education. Danville High School Government and Social Studies teacher Susan Sadler is once again giving us good news about today’s students, saying they are eager to learn more about it. They want to be active, and to understand.
AUDIO: We’ve got like the budget crisis going on between Congress and the president; and the end of the month, where we’ve got to have that budget ready. And how they all have to work together, and how that’s built into the constitution on how that works together.
Sadler says differences between federal and state constitutions and laws is always an interesting topic, especially on social issues.
AUDIO: When we were talking about, something like minimum wage; they’ll say “well yes, it’s going to be $15 here in Illinois.” But yes, that’s in Illinois? What’s the federal? And they had to look that up and realize that the federal is less than half of $15. Issues that they really are consistently wanting to make better across the whole country.
Sadler says, no doubt, she sees a lot of her DHS Government students being future leaders, and right now they are definitely desiring more younger leaders that they can relate to.
