In the early Thursday morning sunshine of the Trinity Lutheran School Parking lot along Main Street, Trinity students, from kindergarten up through 7th grade, were learning from the Danville Fire Department during their Fire Prevention Week tour. As Lieutenant Tim McFadden explains, this year’s main theme is safety in the kitchen. He says wherever you go, cooking fires are the number one problem. And the I and I Firefighters Association Safe House was there to demonstrate.

Trinity Lutheran Students inside the I & I Firefighters Association Safe House were shown kitchen safety tips; before having a practice fire exit on how to meet at a specific place, in this case the I & I Safe House mailbox.
AUDIO: (Kitchen fires) remain the highest cause of fires nationwide. So, we’re trying to raise awareness on how to prevent those. It’s kind of a family effort. We get our kids to our Safe House, where we have an actual kitchen where we can demonstrate some of the techniques that we recommend to help prevent those fires; like turning the handles on the pots, having a three foot safe area to keep the kids away from the cooking area. So we’re hoping that they take the things that they learn here from us, take them home to their parents, and they can work on those together.
Also emphasized, as they are every year during Fire Prevention Week; are the importance of how to stop, drop, and roll if you find yourself caught in a fire. And then how to call 9-1-1 properly, and knowing your address.
