There were a few days of rain in a row last weekend, and it looks like we are headed that way for this weekend. Tom Fricke from the Vermilion County Farm Bureau says during the harvest season it’s always not how much in rains, but how hard. And two factors have been working in favor of the farmers. ONE, the harvest was already off to a solid start; AND TWO, the fields were in position to handle some rain.
AUDIO: We’ve been so dry that the soil will soak this up fairly quickly, if we’re not talking about three or four inches of rain that would keep you out of the field for two or three days. But, if you’re working on corn; you get a little bit of breeze, dry those shucks back out again; you can get back at it quicker than you can the soybeans.
Speaking of the soybeans; Fricke says if there’s one thing Vermilion County can hang its hat on right now, it’s that the soybeans are looking quite good.
AUDIO: Obviously there are going to be some instances where, if you weren’t involved in a spot that got that August rain, you will be impacted. But for most part, I think the soybean harvest has been a pleasant surprise. Not a bin buster, not a record; but a whole lot better than people were anticipating.
Fricke says a lot of farmers still have soybeans to harvest, before they go back to finishing the corn.
