Tricia Keith from the Vermilion County Regional Office of Education says the annual “From Your Heart to Their Soles” shoe drive actually goes all year long. But this time of year, still early in the school year and heading into winter, is definitely a time to push hard for more donations.
As Keith recently explained to Laura Williams on 1490 WDAN’s Community Connection program, not having proper fitting shoes can keep a youngster from wanting to go to school, or cause problems while at school. And sometimes shoes are forgotten when it comes to “things families might need.” But when families find out about “From Your Heart to Their Soles,” they are often very relieved.
AUDIO: (They will say) “this is what our needs are.” And we’re talking families with three, four, five, six, seven kids; and that’s a big expense. And for us to be able to say “Yes, we can help you,” with really minimal questions asked. And there’s no income guidelines; there’s no paperwork to fill out. It’s just, “hey, we could use a little help right now.”
The shoe drive calls for new, athletic or tennis shoes of ANY AND ALL SIZES. You can drop them off at the Regional Office of Education, which is located on the backside of the Vermilion County Health Department building, at 200 South College Street. Monetary donations are accepted as well.
