Danville Fire Chief Aaron Marcott says it’s nice to see that a child listened last summer when firefighters had a Safe House at American Legion Post 210….
Audio Player{AUDIO: “We got a story from Terre Haute where a family from Danville was over there visiting their grandparents and they smelled smoke. They sent the kids out, the grandkids out, and they went around a tree and the girl found a meeting place. (They) noticed the roof was on fire, went back in and got the grandparents – got them out and called the fire department from a neighbor. And when they were done she said that that was from a fire prevention class that she had – that we hosted at the Legion this summer. So the Terre Haute Fire Department is giving that family an award over there for the kids for doing that thing. And it was kind of neat just to have our guys hear that the stuff they did paid off for somebody in real life.”}
Marcott was commenting during a Public Services Committee meeting of the Danville City Council last evening (Tuesday, November 28, 2023).
During the meeting the committee voted to recommend the full city council approve an application to the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. If the grant is approved the money would go to purchase some gear for the department.
Also during the meeting, Danville Police Chief Chris Yates announced that online reporting of incidents will be coming soon.
Yates said each report will still be reviewed by the Patrol Division, and some will be forwarded to detectives. But the online reporting system will allow citizens to report such things as minor thefts or criminal damage to property online – without the need for an officer to respond to the scene. Chief Yates noted that even if it reduces the number of police responses by only two percent it would be significant. He says Danville Police have been responding to 34 thousand to 37 thousand calls for service each year.
