Not only can the East Central Illinois Community Action Agency help you with winter energy bills, they can also assist you with making your home more energy efficient. During their recent appearance with Laura Williams on 1490 WDAN’s Community Connection program, CEO Odette Hyatt Watson gave an update on their work with the Low Income Housing Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, and who they are assisting at this time.
AUDIO: At this moment we are serving our elderly, 60 and older; we are serving people who are disconnected, regardless of age, regardless of home, if you’re disconnected and you have a disconnected bill, definitely we want to see you, we want to help you; and then households with children under the age of six.
You will need proof of household size, which often can be done with Social Security cards for everybody; a copy of your power bill; and proof of the last 30 days of income.

The East Central Illinois Community Action Agency can also help you with their weatherization program. As Energy Coordinator Trenice Pickens says you need to be below the federal income poverty level to participate, and there are many ways to go about this.
AUDIO: The assessor will go out to your home. They will do a series of tests and measures to see how we can help you save energy. Whether it’s insulating your walls, caulking windows, and replacing your furnace or boiler. There’s also health and safety measures as well.
