State Senator Tom Bennett’s earlier announcement that he would not seek re-election has attracted four Republicans who hope to win his seat. Monday was the last day of a week-long period in which candidates could file nominating papers with the Illinois State Board of Elections. Those who filed hoping to replace Bennett include Susan Wynn Bence of Watseka, Mike Kirkton of Gridley, Jesse Faber of rural Pontiac, and Chris Balkema of Channahon.
In the 104th Illinois House District where State Representative Mike Marron is leaving before his term ends, two people have filed for the seat. They are Democrat Jarrett Clem of rural St. Joseph and Republican Brandun Schweizer of rural Danville. Marron still has another year left in his term but he is stepping down to become the new President and CEO of Vermilion Advantage. Marron starts his new job on December 18th.
State Senator Paul Faraci is seeking re-election in the 52nd District. He is a Democrat and will face a challenge next year from Republican Jeff Brownfield of Champaign.
Two other legislators from the area will apparently face no opposition in the 2024 Illinois Primary Election. They are Democrat Carol Ammons of Urbana in the 103rd District, and Representative Adam Niemerg of rural Dieterich in the 102nd District. He is a Republican. Only the incumbents filed candidacy petitions in those two districts.
