A ceremony at Danville’s Municipal Building Monday welcomed a new Probationary Firefighter. John Koller was welcomed to the department by other Danville Firefighters. Assistant Chief Tom Darby told Koller that he was joining a family of firefighters.
Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr., addressed the other firefighters in the room…
{AUDIO: “You all have been there at some point, whether it was in the last six months or whether it was in the last twenty-five years. You all came and you made this same commitment. And young man, what I want to say to you is that this is a commitment that I hope you will not take lightly. Everyday your life is going to be on the line, and you are going to be not only having the backs of your brothers and sisters in the fire department, but you are going to be meeting the public…most of them at their worst hour. Whether it be a medical emergency or a fire – they’re at risk of losing everything, including their lives.’’}
Passing motorists may have noticed the firefighting equipment parked along Walnut Street during the ceremony. It was there so firefighters could attend the ceremony to welcome Koller.
