As we are into the second week of the new year, the battle continues both statewide and locally against dogs with respiratory illnesses. Vermilion County Animal Shelter Director Kasey Snyder says as of the end of last week about 30 dogs in their custody were battling possible pneumonia symptoms.
AUDIO: Some of them are getting listened to to see if their lungs sound clear, and if they’re able to move to the adoption floor. I think we have 13 that are ready to move over if they can pass their medical evaluation. So, we’re getting there.
The shelter is, for now, maintaining its policy of not taking in any additional dogs. However, if you come across a stray dog, please report it to the shelter at 217-431-2660. Snyder says they can explain what your options are; as well as your options for giving a dog away.
AUDIO: We can provide them with anything they need to help hold on to the animal. We can network the animal if they’re looking to ‘owner surrender.’ So there’s lots of other options, besides bringing it in, that we can help out with.
And if you’d like information on adopting one of the shelter’s isolated, healthy dogs; you can also call 217-431-2660. Again, respiratory difficulties are very common in dogs; so to find out if what your dog has is a serious illness, please see your veterinarian.
