THE FOLLOWING IS A UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE RELEASE
A federal grand jury in Urbana has returned an indictment charging a Clinton, Indiana woman with an alleged murder-for-hire scheme. The indictment against 31-year-old Davetta Cox alleges that she sought to hire someone believed to be a hitman to kill another individual. Cox is facing two counts, including charges of offering $6-thousand dollars for the murder of an individual.
In a news release the U.S. District Attorney’s Office said the alleged murder for hire scheme occurred between January 16th and 26th of this year.
Cox was arrested in Charleston, Illinois on January 26th, and has remained in custody in Macon County since then.
Members of the public are reminded that an indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. If convicted, the maximum statutory penalties for the alleged crimes are up to twenty years in prison, up to a $500-thousand dollar fine, and up to six years of supervised release.
Agencies participating in the investigation include the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Springfield Field Office and Illinois State Police.
