The demolition has been taking place this week, and the underground work is yet to come. Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr says the owners of the old gas station next to Royal Donut on the northeast corner of Fairchild and Vermilion received a permit from the state fire marshal for the removal of the old underground tanks, along with a grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency LUST Fund (leaking underground storage tanks).
Mayor Williams says the owners have until when the permit expires on October 1st. And while the work on the old station structure has kicked it off, there’s a lot more to do.
AUDIO: So they have to not only demo everything that we can see, but also the connections to the tanks and then to remove the tanks themselves. So this will be quite the process.
What’s going to go on that corner on the 3rd busiest Danville intersection next? The mayor says that answer is down the road, but he thought of two certain possibilities.
AUDIO: What I would like to see is some kind of thriving business there. For example, we don’t have many fuel stations in that part of town. It would be nice to have another nice gas station there as some point. You know, maybe the folks over at Royal Donut will have need for expansion. But, just to have it cleaned up, I think is huge.
And with the permit expiring October 1st, Mayor Williams points out that ironically that’s when the new northWEST corner of Fairchild and Vermilion should be ready to go.
AUDIO: That should be around the time that we’ll see Sonic and Jimmy John’s opening up. So it will be great to have a brand new looking corner, and everything on the corner looking good at that point.
The old gas station property is owned by GBL; based in Sherman, Illinois.
