Between now and the first week of June, you can help a Danville District 118 Kenneth D. Bailey Academy teacher win a competition that would bring about a major windfall for some educational goals.
Kendra Free teaches a variety of Social Studies, Science, and Health classes at the academy. She got involved in the Reader’s Digest America’s Favorite Teacher competition because of what it would mean if she wins. As Free explains, she has experience writing and obtaining grants, often with the help of the Danville Public Schools Foundation. And winning this competition would be like being awarded with a grant.
AUDIO: It’s $25,000. I would plan on using some of it for my classroom. I take students every Thursday, and we volunteer at the Vermilion County Animal Shelter. And so I would donate money to the animal shelter, from myself and the students that volunteer there. And then we are getting an expansion at the school. So, I told my co-teachers, “You know what, we deserve some fun things in our classrooms.” So I would use some of it for that.
There’s a “wild card” round of voting going on right now, through Sunday, May 5th. Just go to this link to cast your vote: https://americasfavteacher.org/2024/kendra-free
The final winners will be announced on June 7th.
