For those fascinated with Vermilion County history, the place to be Monday afternoon (May 13th) is the first floor meeting room at the Danville Public Library.
Assistant Librarian Melody Williams has invited Scott Norrick to speak, after hearing him make a similar presentation on a webinar up in DuPage County. Williams says Norrick will be mapping out a day in the life of a Vermilion County citizen in 1950, based up a sampling of 5,000 Vermilion County residents from the 1950 census.
Williams says Norrick will be talking about different jobs 1950 Vermilion County residents had. The top two occupations at the time were farming and railroad work, but there are some other surprises as well. In addition, there will be discussion about Vermilion County families’ roots at that time. And as it turns out, many county families were already well established by then.
AUDIO: He says that for much of the data, Danville and Vermilion County looked like typical Illinois and midwestern communities. The exception was that Vermilion County residents were much less likely to have been born outside the U.S. than average. And parents were much less likely to have been born overseas.
Monday’s program at the Danville Public Library begins at 1 PM.
