About two dozen volunteers turned out on Mother’s Day Sunday as the Vermilion County Handicapped Association kicked-off its ramp building season. Bill Pickett has more….
Kip Sullivan is the president of the Association….
{AUDIO – “Finally got started when the weather turned nice. And it’s about a 35-footer. And its Mother’s Day, so some of the mothers are out and brought their sons and daughters with them. And it’s a beautiful day to do it.”}

The Handicapped Association builds ramps – free of charge – for people with disabilities who need one at their home. Sullivan (shown at top left in front of trailer) says the group has been building ramps for years…
{Audio – “We’ve been building ramps probably about twenty-five years. And we started the Handicapped Association – I think it was in ’94 – I think it was.”}
Sunday’s recipient of a new ramp lives near Danville Stadium.
And so where does the group get its money for the ramps?….
{AUDIO – “Well, our main one is we have a fundraiser every year where we raffle-off a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle – a new one every year. And this year it’s a 2024 Road Glide. And the raffle will be held September 7th at Julee’s Shooting Star in Westville. And the tickets are coming out – probably today.”}
Sullivan says he appreciates those who show-up to help whenever the word goes out that it’s time to build another ramp…
{AUDIO – “We have a good bunch of volunteers – and a lot of them have been here for years, years. I’ve been probably twenty-five years, and Butch has been here for longer. And Patty has been here since they started. Yow, we’ve got a lot of people who have been around a long time doing this.”}
