The November General Election is still over four months away, but the Danville Election Commission is already training people who will be manning the polls. Bill Pickett has the story….
Sandra Delhaye, Executive Director of the Election Commission, says election judges play a crucial role…
{AUDIO: “You know what? We would not be able to have elections without the judges. And that’s why it’s so important to give them the proper training and the tools that they need to be successful. Because it’s a long day, and if you’re sitting there for a twelve (or) fourteen- hour day – and you’re not sure what you’re doing – that’s tough.”}
Delhaye expects election judges will have a busy day when voters head to the polls on November 5th….
{AUDIO: “The only thing is – with being required by the State Board of Elections to send out letters to all of the registered voters within the city limits of Danville – we have to ask them ‘do you want a vote by mail ballot?’ So that could change things at the polls if people get the letter and they think, ‘Oh, you know what? That might be a good idea.”}
(Delhaye addresses election judges during one of the training sessions at the Joseph G. Cannon Building in Danville.)
There are about 16-thousand registered voters inside Danville, and if you are not among them Delhaye reminds voters that registration is now open….
{AUDIO: “People can register now – and they are doing it. Because we are seeing – not necessarily an influx – but we are having people calling wanting to know if they can register to vote. So I think the closer it gets – the busier it’s going to get.”}
The Danville Election Commission hosted two training sessions over the weekend for people who will be working at the polls in November. Meanwhile, Delhaye says it is not too late to become an election judge.
