Vermilion County Animal Shelter Director Kasey Snyder says her staff has so many to thank after getting through last week’s air conditioning difficulties during extreme heat.
Snyder says there were often loads of people in line at the shelter well into the evening offering to take animals home with them for foster care or adoption so they could be comfortable.
Snyder also reports that county maintenance arrived last Friday to begin the installation of two new split air conditioning units, while numerous air conditioning companies reached out to offer assistance. In addition, Dogtown Heating and Air ended up coming and fixing the rest of the shelter’s air conditioners that either were not running or were blowing hot air.
Many of the residents who took animals home have chosen to adopt them, or keep them in foster care until they find permanent homes. This, in turn, gives the shelter more space to welcome additional animals. Snyder says “thank yous” go out to all who donated supplies and their time; as well as to other shelters, veterinary clinics, and the University of Illinois for their assistance.
Also, within about two weeks the Vermilion County Animal Shelter should have a final evaluation from Shelter Planners of America, so that a recommended plan can be presented to the County Board for either a brand new complete shelter or a partial new shelter; allowing the Vermilion County Animal Shelter to increase the services it can offer.
