The 23rd Annual Cops Cycling for Survivors bike ride around Indiana begins Monday (July 8, 2024). The ride is held to pay respects to Indiana’s fallen law enforcement officers, and to let loved ones know they are not forgotten.
It was during one of the rides on August 22nd, 2006, that two officers were killed along Indiana route 63 near Perrysville. Indiana State Police Lieutenant Gary Dudley and retired Lake County Chief Gary Martin died when a large box truck struck the rear of a support truck for the bikers. The impact knocked the support truck into some of the cyclists.
Some of the officers participating in the ride that day were determined to honor Lieutenant Dudley and Chief Martin and have continued the rides over the years. This year the ride honors seven Indiana police officers whose 2023 deaths were in the line of duty.
