A December 9th sentencing date has been set for a Danville man who was convicted on federal charges of carjacking and murder. Thirty-four-year-old Kevin Marshall was convicted on charges he carjacked and murdered Daniel Walter, 28, of rural Indiana. A jury returned five guilty verdicts against Marshall in U. S. District Court in Urbana.
During a week-long trial, the government presented evidence that on April 25th, 2020, Marshall rode with Walter and Marshall’s girlfriend to an address in the 1600 block of Ray Street in Danville. Once there, jurors were told Marshall directed Walter to get out of the truck. Marshall then shot Walter four times and left him near a garage, according to testimony. Jurors were also told Marshall had his girlfriend stop the truck as she and Marshall were leaving the scene. The prosecution says Marshall then exited the vehicle and shot Walter five more times.
The evidence showed Marshall and his girlfriend fled to Belvidere, Illinois but Marshall was arrested on August 18th, 2020 at a Casey’s gas station in Danville.
At sentencing, Marshall faces statutory penalties of up to life imprisonment for the carjacking resulting in death and murder convictions.
The case was investigated by Danville Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation Springfield Field Office, Illinois State Police, Belvidere Police Department, U. S. Marshals Service, Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U. S. Attorneys Bryan D. Freres and Eugene L. Miller represented the government during the trial, in cooperation with Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy.
