It was one month ago that Vermilion County and Danville unemployment numbers both saw a significant jump, for May to June; as those who had lost jobs when Danville’s Quaker Oats plant closed were placed into the equation, since their payroll had been extended through June 8th.
Now, with the June to July numbers now released, the negative direction continues. Vermilion County unemployment numbers are up for the third straight month, and the City of Danville’s for the second straight month.
Vermilion County’s numbers show the unemployment rate rising from 7.5% in June to 7.9% in July. Vermilion County’s rate was back at 6.3% in July of 2023.
For the City of Danville, the unemployment rate increased from 8.6% in June to 9.2% in July. Danville’s rate stood at 7.7% in July of last year.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the latest numbers have not been seasonally adjusted.
Also in Vermilion County, total non-farm employment has dropped by 100 when comparing July of 2023 to July of 2024. Looking at specific categories: Government jobs, Mining and Construction, Retail Trade, and Wholesale Trade are all up 100 jobs from one year ago. But that’s taken away by the 500 jobs lost in Manufacturing from July of last year.
Meanwhile, non-farm employment in Private Education and Health Services, Information, Leisure and Hospitality, Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities, Financial Activities, Professional Business Services, and Other Services are all unchanged in Vermilion County from one year ago.
