Veterans Day is Monday, November 11th, but a number of activities honoring veterans are getting underway early in the Danville area. A program honoring veterans is taking place this morning (Friday) at 10:00 a.m. at Judith Giacoma Elementary School in Westville.
On Saturday, the 9th Annual Veterans Day 5k is being held, starting at American Legion Post 210 at 11:00 a.m. The Post is located at 201 Prospect Place (along North Jackson Street) in Danville. Participants can run or walk the route. After the race, Vernon Davis III will be speaking at the Legion at 12:30 p.m. He is a 5th generation Army Veteran.
On Monday the main local Veteran’s Day event will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the World War II Memorial, located along North Hazel Street in Danville. (The memorial is located directly south of the Kruger Funeral Home.)
American Legion Post 210 in Danville will be providing free chili to veterans on November 11th, from noon until 6:00 p.m. The general public is also invited for a free will donation.
The Vermilion County War Museum, at 307 North Vermilion Street in Danville, will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary on Monday. It was on Veterans Day in 1999 that the museum opened its doors in the old Carnegie Library building downtown. The War Museum is hosting an open house Monday from noon until 4:00 p.m. (Admission is free.)
All Veterans will be honored Sunday with a special program that begins at 3:00 p.m. at the Second Church of Christ in Danville. The church is located at 3350 East Voorhees Street. The program will include a 60 minute video tribute featuring several local veterans. A community choir will also perform, and the guest speaker will be State Representative Brandun Schweizer.
The general public is invited to all of these events as we salute area veterans for their service.
