The festival started in 1997. For 23 years, the hospital foundation presented the event, raising more than $4 million to support community outreach and health initiatives. In 2020, OSF Healthcare Sacred Heart Medical Center transferred festival operations to Balloons Over Vermilion, starting with the 2021 event. Balloons Over Vermilion nonprofit also runs the annual hot air balloon festival and has consistently given back to the community since 2016.
With the addition of Festival of Trees, BOV’s board of directors commits 100 percent of the net proceeds from both events to benefit children in the community. Guided by their motto “It’s for the Kids,” they’re dedicated to their Community Impact Awards. Under the agreement with OSF, a portion of festival proceeds goes back to the hospital for the first five years, according to organizers.
