THE FOLLOWING IS A DANVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT RELEASE
On Sunday, November 24, 2024, at 1:03 PM, Danville Firefighters were called to respond to a possible house fire in the 1600 block of North Franklin Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found a light haze of smoke throughout the home. After investigating the source of the smoke, firefighters were able to locate a pile of burning blankets set too close to a hot water heater in the basement of the home that had caught fire. The items were extinguished with minimal damage to the home.
After the fire was out and the smoke was removed from the home, firefighters were informed by family members that it was Mason McGuire, age 6, a resident of the home, who told his grandmother, Priscilla Bradberry, to “get out” of the house and to call 9-1-1. Mason directed his grandmother to a vehicle outside the home. Mason’s actions prevented any delay in calling for help. This quick action most likely resulted in much less damage to the home because of the fire.
Mason’s mother, Gina McGuire, told Fire Chief Aaron Marcott that Mason had just attended fire prevention activities at the Danville Fire Department through Northeast School. Mrs. McGuire stated she felt it was this recent education that helped Mason act the way he did.
The Fire Department will formally recognize Mason for his actions at a later date.
