A Danville City Council Committee is backing Police Chief Christopher Yates proposal to raise the maximum recruitment age to forty. Chief Yates told members of the Public Services Committee this week that some departments have dropped the maximum age limit for police recruits altogether. But Yates noted he will soon be fifty-three, adding he thinks that’s too old to start. Instead, Yates thinks forty should be the maximum age that someone can try to join the Danville Police Department. The proposal now heads to the full city council for consideration.
Chief Yates explained the Danville department holds three testing periods each year for potential new officers. Candidates for the May 2025 class going to the University of Illinois Police Training Institute have already passed a written exam. Physical agility tests for those candidates will occur in late January or February according to Yates.
Committee members were also told that twenty-five kids recently graduated after attending Danville’s Citizens Police Academy. Classes were held at the police department’s new training center on East Voorhees Street. It is located inside the Scott Eisenhauer Public Works Building.
