DANVILLE — The Three Kings of Peace group is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in last week’s triple shooting in which two people were killed at a Danville barbershop.
Ed Butler with the group, which for many years has been having marches and going into schools to mentor Danville’s youth on peace and non-violence, said they’ve “been given stories and stuff” and they’re trying to get down to the root of the cause of the shooting in which two people lost their lives.
Butler said they know the cause. The shooting involved rival gangs, he said.
“We don’t know who done it,” he said. “We’re on the trail.”
That’s why The Three Kings of Peace is offering a reward to find the killer.
“We need to look out for some retaliations,” Butler also said.
Butler said it’s sad and heartbreaking to see another shooting in the community, this time in which a 17-year-old, whose name is not being released, and 33-year-old Keith Stone of Danville were killed. He said the 17-year-old’s mom just died last year, too.
“It makes our job hard. Our Black community, we try to save our young kids from all this violence,” Butler said.
He said they try to get youths and gangs into their center on Roselawn Street to try to steer them straight.
Danville police Chief Chris Yates on Monday said he couldn’t comment on what happened with the shooting nor say anything more at the moment about the investigation. He wants to be cautious and not hinder anything.
“At this point, our guys are working very hard and trying to put everything together,” Yates said. “I can’t release anything else. We’re still in that critical time of the investigation. Our guys are working their tails off and putting in a lot of effort into this.”
Assistance of the community also has been excellent, he added.
The Danville Police Department is seeking the public’s help as it continues to investigate Wednesday’s shooting incident, in which two people were killed and a third person injured.
According to the Vermilion County Coroner’s Office and Danville Police Department, Stone and the 17-year-old juvenile died as a result of the violence that occurred at A+ Cutz, a barbershop in the 1900 block of East Main Street, around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.
A third victim who also was involved has been released from the hospital. That person’s name is not being released at this time, according to police.
Illinois State Police assisted Danville officers in processing the crime scene and gathering evidence.
The Danville Police Department continues to work with leads and gather further evidence. The need for the public and community to reach out with information about this incident is imperative, said Yates, who indicated that much information has been gathered through courageous members of our community speaking out.
