DANVILLE — The Danville City Council has board appointments to consider approving and an Assistance to Firefighters grant among the agenda items for its first meeting in 2025.
The council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Robert E. Jones Municipal Building, 17 W. Main St.
The council will consider approving Mayor Rickey Williams Jr.’s appointment of Kristina Dixon and reappointment of George Dowell to the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, and the reappointments of Jakob Dazey and Kim Hoffman to the David S. Palmer Arena Board.
Dixon will take the place of longtime fire and police board member and retired Danville Area Community College President Stephen Nacco.
In an email exchange between Williams and Nacco, Williams stated, “Dear Dr. Nacco, On behalf of the City of Danville and Board of Fire & Police Commissioners, I want to thank you for your years of service on the board. You have spent countless hours in meetings updating policies and during testing and interviews choosing candidates to join two of our most critical assets: the police and fire departments. Thank you for everything you’ve done for Danville in this capacity. You will be pleased to know that I will be appointing Kristina Dixon as your successor as she is someone who will take the job as seriously as you did.”
In response, Nacco stated, “Dear Mayor: Thank you for your email and your kind words. Serving on the Fire and Police Board was an honor and privilege.”
Nacco said he served on the board for six years. He’d talked with Williams a couple years ago when his last two-year term took effect about possible replacements when his term would end in December 2024, he said.
Nacco said he was asked by then Mayor Scott Eisenhauer to serve on the board, not knowing anything about it.
“It is interesting,” Nacco said.
In other business Tuesday, the council is expected to: discuss the council’s voting procedures regarding majority votes and when the mayor votes; and act on accepting a $10,000 community service grant from Yvorra Leadership Development Foundation for new-hire firefighting training; renewing a one-year banking services agreement with First Financial Bank where no agreement existed between the bank and city since 2019 after being approved in 2018, and the rate structure was reviewed on an annual basis by First Financial; and approving the city applying for up to a $175,000 Assistance to Firefighters grant, with up to a $16,000 city match required, for a replacement fire hose and nozzles.
