The end of a legislative session in Washington, or in any state, can bring about a variety of twists, turns, and opinions. Over in Springfield, the Illinois House and Senate are wrapping up the 103rd General Assembly. One of the legislators in this region, Republican Senator Chapin Rose, says not enough attention is being paid to helping keep the everyday person safe, and helping keep the everyday family financially stable.
Rose says when Democrats in the Senate called a vote on Sunday, when most of the attention in the state was on the approaching winter storm, it was for the wrong reason. He says the proposed legislation making it easier for immigrants to change their names creates a dangerous situation. What the Senate passed would need to be approved by the House before the session ends, but could be signed into law by the governor after the next session begins.
AUDIO: To allow any illegal immigrant that makes it to Illinois to change their name; with no inquiry by the judge, no proof of legal status, no nothing. All you do is fill out a piece of paperwork, to change your name; so they can try to hide these people from ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customers Enforcement) and the Trump Administration. So when are we going to start supporting the citizens of Illinois?
When it comes to area families and their budgets, Rose says he is tired of subsidies being given to companies wanting to put up solar or wind farms. Because after all, someone ends up paying for it.
AUDIO: I love the word “subsidy,” because it implies like it’s paid for by someone else. It’s paid for by the rate payers. The rate payers are people. And when you give a subsidy to these wind and solar companies, for putting up these massive windmills and all these solar farms, it’s the little guy in Georgetown, Illinois; trying to put food on his kid’s table. That’s coming out of their pocket.
The 104th General Assembly is scheduled to be seated at 12 Noon Wednesday (Jan 8th).
