A Westville Police officer was honored last night (Wednesday) with two lifesaving awards. Officer Kenneth Guerrero acted quickly on December 5th, 2024 after receiving a report that a female was choking on food, according to Police Chief Justin Varvel….
{AUDIO: “As he entered the residence he found the victim standing in the kitchen. He quickly assessed that the victim was choking on food and unable to breathe and on the verge of losing consciousness. Officer Guerrero quickly reassured the victim and began performing the Heimlich Maneuver. After a few seconds – and in less than one minute from his arrival on the scene – the food was dislodged from the victim’s airway and she was able to breathe again.”

The second incident occurred on Christmas Eve, 2024, when Officer Guerrero received a report about a person who was unconscious and not breathing….
{AUDIO: “Officer Guerrero immediately entered the residence and found the victim unconscious, not breathing, and with no pulse. He then began performing CPR on the victim until EMS arrived a few minutes later. He continued assisting EMS until they transported the patient. The victim in this case has made a full recovery, and from what I’ve been advised, it’s likely that would not have been the case without Officer Guerrero’s actions.”}

Chief Varvel says Westville Police officers attended over 900 hours of training during 2024. Officer Guerrero was unaware that he was going to be honored during the Westville Village Board meeting. One of the persons he saved was also on hand for the presentation.
