THE FOLLOWING IS A NEWS-GAZETTE STORY BY JENNIFER BAILEY
ABOVE: Erin Houpt and her father, Ted, after San Diego State won the Mountain West Conference Championship in Las Vegas to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament.
DANVILLE — When Erin Houpt decided to transfer to San Diego State, her family knew they wouldn’t be able to attend all her basketball games due to the distance.
Her next game — Saturday’s NCAA tournament opener against host LSU — is less of a trip, but its timing is making travel tricky. Erin’s mom, Kathy, said that because of already set spring break plans, they’re not sure if they’ll be able to make it to Baton Rouge, La.
It’s the second time the former News-Gazette All-Area Player of the Year from Danville High has reached the Big Dance (she also played while at Mercer).
“You hope to go once,” Kathy said. Having Erin go twice, now being a junior, “It’s very cool. It’s a great experience when you go.”
Erin is averaging 4.9 points and has started 13 games.
Kathy, a kindergarten teacher at Edison Elementary School in Danville, and her husband, Ted, retired from the Danville school district, usually spread out and travel separately to Erin’s games to see as many of them as they can.
