TILTON — As the state will no longer collect a 1 percent sales tax on groceries starting Jan. 1, 2026, the village of Tilton is the latest municipality to approve a local replacement grocery tax to keep the revenue coming in.
Tilton board members approved an ordinance Thursday night implementing a municipal grocery retailers’ occupation tax and a municipal grocery service occupation tax that would start Jan. 1.
The Danville City Council approved a local replacement tax too in December.
The current state tax on groceries is 1 percent. For every $100 spent, $1 is collected and sent to a municipality.
Tilton City Administrator Tiffany McClellan said they receive about $120,000 annually from the tax.
