Numbers released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security are showing an increase in area unemployment coming out of 2024 and into 2025, but a better picture than one year ago.
Unemployment in Vermilion County showed an increase from 5.4% in December, to 6.4% in January. However, Vermilion County’s rate came in at 6.5% in January of 2024.
For the City of Danville, unemployment increased from 6.4% in December to 7.0% in January; but stood at 7.6% in January of 2024.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the latest numbers have not been seasonally adjusted.
Also in Vermilion County, total non-farm employment showed a drop of 575 jobs from January of 2024 to January of 2025.
In looking at specific categories, employment increased in Private Education – Health Services by 350, and in Leisure – Hospitality by 150.
However, there were drops of 375 jobs in Trade-Transportation-Utilities, 300 jobs in Manufacturing, 175 in Professional – Business Services, 125 in both Government and Construction, and 25 in both Information and Other Services.
Payrolls were unchanged in Natural Resources – Mining and Financial Activities.
