THE FOLLOWING IS AN INDIANA STATE POLICE RELEASE
Saturday evening March 22nd, just before 10:30 p.m., troopers and other first responders were called to a five-vehicle crash on I-74 westbound near the 2-mile marker.
A preliminary investigation conducted by the Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team indicates that a vehicle was traveling eastbound on I-74 when, for an unknown reason, it crossed through the median and struck a westbound vehicle. The vehicle that was struck came to rest in the left lane. Two other vehicles that had witnessed the crash stopped at the scene, and while they were stopped, a fifth vehicle struck the two stopped vehicles and the originally struck vehicle.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Vermillion County Coroner. The name of the deceased driver will be released by the Coroner’s office at a later time. The driver of the westbound vehicle that was initially struck was transported via helicopter to a hospital in the Indianapolis area and their condition is unknown. The driver of the fifth vehicle involved was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The drivers of the two vehicles that had stopped and were struck were uninjured.
This remains an active investigation by the Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team. There is no further information to release at this time.
