DANVILLE — A murder trial that was to start Tuesday for Brandon A. Buford in Vermilion County Circuit Court has been continued.
According to Lucy Overlander with the Vermilion County State’s Attorney’s Office, the delay is due to the defendant hiring a new attorney.
“We believe it will go to trial sometime in the summer,” Overlander said.
Last year, Buford was denied release under the Illinois Safe-T Act provisions prior to his trial for the alleged May 4, 2023 killing of 33-year-old Christopher J. Smalls of Danville.
Although cash bail was eliminated in Illinois when a new provision of the Safe-T Act took effect, prosecutors can still appeal for a defendant to be held prior to trial, based upon reasons such as being a danger to the community or a flight risk.
