DANVILLE — With summer months just around the corner, notices from the Danville Police Department have gone out to area students for this year’s Friendly Town’s safety program.
The program is free and open to children in first through third grades. For more information, visit the police department’s Facebook page.
Police Chief Chris Yates talked about Friendly Town at Friday’s Step Up community group meeting.
He said last year was a banner year for reinvigorating Friendly Town with needed construction, tree cleanup and sprucing up by hundreds of community volunteers of the tiny town’s buildings, roadways and landscaping at Lincoln Park and its seen expanded usage.
Last May saw an “Operation Friendly Town” kick-off with groups adopting structures and areas, and May 3-4 this year will see more volunteer efforts at the site.
Yates said Friendly Town also is available for even more organizations to host events there.
“Friendly Town is just not for police and police community events,” Yates said. “I want to partner with any organization that wants to come out.”
They had 87 students at Friendly Town in 2023. In 2024, it served more than 2,000 students.
