DANVILLE — The initial alert came out in January that there was a 90-year-old veteran who didn’t have heat in his home.
He had a hole in his roof and had been going to bed with his hat, coat and gloves on.
But when word spread that one of American Legion Post 210’s own needed assistance, the community quickly stepped up.
“The more we explored, the more we realized,” said Veterans Assistance Commission of Vermilion County Superintendent Marti Carroll. “The south side of his roof had been compromised. Insulation and sheet rock had fallen down and soiled his furniture in the den. Systematically we went about getting this cleared and reached out to different contractors.”
Ed Laking of Danville is grateful local organizations and contractors worked together to replace his roof and fix part of his East Conron Street home, which was built in 1953. Laking lives there with his approximately 19-year-old cat, Nellie.
