DANVILLE — Almost 100 Vermilion County first-graders tested their brains on math skills with addition, subtraction, even and odd numbers, fractions and probability questions at the Danville School District 118 First Grade Math Challenge at Danville High School on Wednesday.
Bismarck-Henning students Josie Scates, 7, Eli Creed, 7, and Camden Haugen, 6, were busy figuring out the math equations and solving the posed questions with Bismarck-Henning-Rossville-Alvin High School Senior Cole Crawley guiding them through each page of questions.
Scates said the questions were “easy” and that they were having fun.
Mark Denman Elementary School student Jeremiah Denson was trying to figure out a fraction answer to the question, “1st Graders at Salt Fork Elementary celebrated the end of the year with cake. The picture to the left represents the cake that has been eaten. The shaded portion is the amount of cake left over. Identify the fraction of the cake that is represented by the shaded portion. Explain your answer.”
