Vermilion County Supervisor of Assessments Nate Byram says he has been talking to other officeholders about the need for a coordinated shredding program. Byram wants to make sure confidential information on documents remains confidential until it is shredded. County Human Resources Director Nancy Boose agrees. Bill Pickett has more…
Audio PlayerThe discussion followed the discovery last month that some county papers containing personal information were flying around the site where the Vermilion County Courthouse Annex was being demolished. The papers had been stored in the building.
“This is not just trash,” said Byram during a Finance and Personnel Committee meeting of the County Board Monday evening (May 5, 2025). Byram said he would be contacting all nine officeholders regarding establishing a coordinated shredding program. Both he and Boose added, however, that it is their responsibility to handle the destruction of items from their respective offices.
County Board member Jerry Hawker agrees with Byram that there should be a coordinated shredding program…

Two times, three times, four times a year the shredding truck comes. The departments make sure that whatever they’ve been authorized to shred gets to the truck and gets shredded.”}
There are currently stacks of papers awaiting the shredding process in the sally port area of the Joseph G. Cannon Building which is where many county offices are located. “They need to be shredded tomorrow,’’ said Boose.
Committee members were also told a lot of decisions will need to be made regarding animal control. There have already been some discussions regarding it with Danville Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr. and some aldermen.
The committee was also told more discussions are needed regarding county employee health insurance. A vast number of county employees use Health Alliance. The insurance carrier announced earlier that it will be discontinuing all except its Medicare Advantage program by the end of the year.
