On May 9, 2025, Tyler Johnson (DOB: 8/16/1992), formerly of Danville, Illinois, pleaded guilty in 2024-CF-684 to Aggravated Domestic Battery – Great Bodily Harm, a class 2 felony, and in 2025-CF-009 to Aggravated Battery – Great Bodily Harm, a class 3 felony. Johnson was sentenced in 2024-CF-684 to 4 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections to be served at 85% under Illinois’ truth-in-sentencing laws. Johnson was also sentenced in 2025-CF-009 to 5 years Illinois Department of Corrections, with sentences to be served concurrent. Johnson will also serve a term of 4 years mandatory supervised release following his term of imprisonment. The plea and sentencing were presided over by Judge Mark S. Goodwin.
The People presented evidence in 2024-CF-684, that on September 22, 2024, Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department received a report that Tyler Johnson had battered a household member. A witness stated that Johnson said he was going to speak to the victim, who was asleep in another room. The witness then heard a loud striking sound coming from the room and saw Johnson run out of the residence. The victim was found with a large head wound, and a golf club, believed to be the weapon used, was located in the path of Johnson’s escape. Members of the Sheriff’s Department interviewed Johnson after he was located the next day and he admitted to striking the victim with the golf club after an argument.
The People also presented evidence in 2025-CF-009, that law enforcement learned that an inmate at the Public Safety Building was the victim of an aggravated battery. Investigation by the Sheriff’s Department revealed that Tyler Johnson, along with two other inmates, co-defendants Bradlee Williams and Jason Johnson, repeatedly struck and kicked the victim, who suffered multiple injuries, including a broken jaw, requiring hospital treatment. Co-defendant, Jason Johnson was interviewed by law enforcement and confirmed he committed the crime with codefendants Tyler Johnson and Bradlee Williams. Jason Johnson pleaded guilty on April 25, 2025 to Aggravated Battery – Great Bodily Harm, a class 3 felony, for 5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Co-Defendant Bradlee Williams’ case is pending.
State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy thanked the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department for their work in both cases. She added, “This defendant has shown a disregard for the safety of others and a clear pattern of violent behavior, both in the community and while detained at the Public Safety Building. These sentences reflect the seriousness with which my office views repeated acts of violence. The People of Vermilion County deserve to be protected from individuals who pose a continued threat.”
The public is reminded that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
