Wednesday, May 14th is once again time for the OPERATION HONOR GUARD DAY OF GIVING. And Rich Darby once again told the amazing story of how it all began, to Tommy B on D102’s The Big Show. It goes back to a hot day in August of 2013. Darby was in attendance at a Sunset Memorial Funeral Home service in Sunset Memorial Park. The local American Legion Post 210 Honor Guard was there to honor the deceased; and Darby knew a special effort for all area Honor Guards was needed.
Audio PlayerAUDIO: They were sweating just as much as I was. We had men and women, average age of 77 years old. I looked at their uniforms and I noticed tha they all had blue blazers on, which I found out were hand me downs from the courthouse bailiffs. And then they all had on gray pants. And they all had different shades of gray, it was kind of funny; nobody really matched. And I just thought to myself, “We need to help them.”
Now, donations and years later, Darby’s effort is being noticed nationwide.
Audio PlayerAUDIO: We do have a good media partner down in Knoxville, Tennessee. We have a day of day of giving event that we host down there. But we decided that it’s time to go national. I get so many e-mails from Honor Guards throughout the country. And I’m talking Florida, Alaska; Seattle, Washington. And they’re reaching out; because financially, they’re hurting.
And of course, Darby’s March 17th appearance on the NewsNation channel gave the effort an additional push. Places to donate Wednesday, May 14th include Hall of Fame Plaques and Signs in Danville; and also Sunset Funeral Home locations in Westville and Covington.
